If you would like to go on a cruise but want to avoid the typical congested costal routes of conventional cruise ships then a Nile river cruise is for you. Nile cruises give you the opportunity to enjoy the art, history and culture of ancient Egypt . Sail past the banks of the narrow, rich green Nile Valley and to the arid desert beyond. Most people who think of Egypt think of antiquities, but it is also part of the Holy Land , and tours to Christian and other religious monuments are popular. Yet Egypt also offers nature and desert treks, great scuba diving and even golf, fishing and birding expeditions.
River cruising is the best way to get a feel for the country that you are traveling in.
River Cruises: Nile Information:
- Onboard, river cruise ships -- which rarely hold more than 200-plus passengers (and generally carry less) -- feel, like smaller versions of cruise ships. They are floating hotels, but you only have to unpack once!
- Around the middle of April, locks on the Nile river are closed due to water levels. The best time for a Nile cruise is between October and mid April, when the weather is fairly cool, but the locks are all open. Prices go up around Christmas and Easter.
- Nile cruises may very considerably, but typical Nile cruises are either, three, four or seven nights. The shorter tours usually operate between Luxor and Aswan , while the longer cruises travel further north to Dendera, often offering day tours overland to more remote locations. Therefore, a fairly complete 14 day tour of Egypt might include several days around Cairo, seeing the pyramids, museums and other antiquities, a short flight to Abu Simbel in the very southern part of Egypt surrounding a seven day Nile Cruise.
- You can expect to sail with a very international passenger mix. You can find Nile river cruises that are specifically arranged for American tourists, however most river cruise lines have an English speaking guide if needed.
